Student Spotlight: Jonathan

Double Duty: How Jonathan Balances High School, College, and Carpentry

It’s not every day you meet a high school student who not only excels academically but also runs a successful business. Jonathan, a senior at Destinations Career Academy of Colorado, is doing just that—juggling his studies, a business, and his passion for music with a grace that belies his years.
Born and raised in Colorado Springs, Jonathan’s educational journey took a unique path when he transitioned from traditional brick-and-mortar schooling to online education at Destinations Career Academy of Colorado, following the onset of COVID-19. This switch was not merely a necessity but a door to a myriad of opportunities. It allowed Jonathan to engage deeply with his studies while balancing his time across various commitments.
Jonathan’s academic prowess is truly commendable. While completing his high school curriculum, he is simultaneously pursuing an associate’s degree in Building and Construction Technology through Pikes Peak State College, and his school’s dual enrollment option. This remarkable achievement comes at minimal financial cost to him, a benefit he greatly appreciates as it allows him to graduate without student loans.
Outside the virtual classroom, Jonathan owns and operates Peak Loafing Sheds, a carpentry business specializing in building mini sheds. In just two years, his company has become a local success, averaging about 115 projects annually. This endeavor is a testament to his hard work and dedication to his craft.

A typical day for Jonathan is a mix of schoolwork, college classes, and carpentry. Evenings are reserved for community engagement at Calvary Church, where he also attends bible study meetings. Until 10th grade, Jonathan was also involved in the Colorado Springs Youth Symphany and was part of the orchestra playing the flute.
Jonathan’s online school experience at Destinations Career Academy of Colorado has been integral in allowing him the flexibility to pursue his various interests. He values how the school supports his unique educational and career path, enabling him to focus on what he truly loves while keeping a balanced schedule.

With high school graduation on the horizon, Jonathan is setting his sights on the next chapter of his life. He plans to obtain his contractor’s license, focusing on residential renovations and construction management. His goal is to further expand his business while continuing to contribute to his community. When he’s not studying, or building sheds, Jonathan enjoys fishing, hanging out with friends, and participating in church outings; including short-term mission trips to Mexico and various locations in the states. Although not a sports enthusiast, he finds his carpentry work to be a perfect physical workout.
Jonathan’s story is a powerful reminder of what young people can achieve with determination, support, and access to the right resources. As he continues to build his future, one thing is clear: the sky’s the limit for this ambitious young entrepreneur and scholar. At Destinations Career Academy of Colorado, stories like Jonathan’s highlight the incredible potential of online education to cater to individual learning needs while empowering students to pursue their dreams.
