At many schools, leadership programs happen in classrooms or auditoriums. At Destinations Career Academy of Colorado (CODCA), leadership is thriving in the digital space. What began as an effort to increase student engagement has grown into a dynamic leadership platform where teens are building tangible skills for the future.

Jennifer Scott, a seasoned math educator and Southern Colorado native, is reshaping how online students connect, collaborate, and lead. With more than a decade of teaching experience and dual master’s degrees in Instructional Design and Educational Leadership, Mrs. Scott launched CODCA’s first-ever Peer Leadership Program, a student-driven initiative centered on mentorship, academic support, and digital collaboration.

Leadership in a Virtual Environment

Online learning is often misunderstood as isolating. CODCA’s Peer Leadership Program challenges that assumption. Through the program, students create YouTube-style news segments to keep classmates informed and connected. They offer tutoring to peers who need academic support. They collaborate in digital spaces to plan events, share announcements, and build community. These experiences mirror real-world professional environments where communication, collaboration, and initiative are essential.

Building Skills That Transfer Beyond High School

The Peer Leadership Program emphasizes more than school spirit. It cultivates public speaking, digital literacy, teamwork, and project management. For students balancing athletics, health challenges, anxiety, or other personal responsibilities, this student-led model provides meaningful opportunities to engage in leadership without stepping outside their learning environment.

It also demonstrates that connection and growth are possible in an online setting when programs are intentionally designed. By mentoring classmates and producing school-wide content, participants gain experience they can highlight on college applications, resumes, and scholarship forms.

A Student-Centered Model in Action

The Peer Leadership Program reflects the school’s broader commitment to preparing students for life beyond graduation. The result is a learning environment where students are not passive participants. They are contributors and creators.

“The online setting serves us well,” Jennifer explains. “It’s more fluid, and we’re able to connect students from all corners of the state.”

As the Peer Leadership Program continues to grow, it serves as a powerful example of how online public schools are innovating education. Leadership, mentorship, and collaboration are

no longer confined to hallways and assemblies. They are thriving in virtual classrooms across Colorado.
