From Soccer Star to Wilderness Enthusiast: Joe’s Journey at Destinations Career Academy of Colorado

At Destinations Career Academy of Colorado, every student’s story matters. Joe, a spirited ninth grader from Lakewood, CO, is no exception. From his first steps into virtual education to earning his Wilderness First Aid Certification, Joe’s journey exemplifies resilience, growth, and a love for adventure.
Discovering Destinations Career Academy of Colorado: A New Way Forward
Joe’s story began in the second semester of seventh grade when his mom discovered Destinations Career Academy of Colorado through an internet search. Joe had previously attended a traditional brick-and-mortar school, but due to his diagnosis of Tuberous Sclerosis—affecting his heart and kidneys—his doctor recommended transitioning to an online learning environment. The pandemic solidified his family’s decision, leading him to the virtual education path.
Today, Joe thrives in this environment, crediting its structure and adaptability to his success. “Online school is easier,” Joe shares. “I can better plan things and still have time to meet up with others.”
Adventure Awaits: Outdoor Leadership and Beyond

Joe’s love for the outdoors blossomed during his time in Destinations Career Academy of Colorado’s Outdoor Leadership program. Starting in seventh grade, he joined hikes and other activities led by Hunter Stafford, one of his favorite teachers. Joe describes himself as an “outside and inside geek” and dreams of trying snowshoeing and backpacking in the future.
This year, Joe proudly earned his Wilderness First Aid Certification. He reflected on the camaraderie built with classmates during the training, “It was so much fun and a great way to connect with everyone,” he said.
A Day in the Life of Joe
Joe’s daily routine is a great example of how he’s mastering independence and time management. His day kicks off bright and early at 8 AM. Balancing live classes, lessons, tests, and homework, Joe stays focused and works hard to keep everything on track.
After school, Joe helps around the house—tackling kitchen cleanup, tidying the living room, and organizing his desk. On weekends, he loves playing Call of Duty and Minecraft on Xbox. Though he dreams of diving into eSports, Joe is content finding joy in his current hobbies, including walking his beloved Newfoundland/Black Lab mix, Cooper.
Overcoming Challenges with Optimism
Joe’s path hasn’t been without hardships. After a house fire in 2021 and a cross-country move to Colorado in 2023, he and his family faced significant challenges. Despite these obstacles, Joe remains hopeful. “It was hard to keep it together, but I’ve found a lot of good here,” he admits.
Overcoming the complexities of autism and ADHD, Joe uses humor and honesty to navigate life. He describes himself as “fidgety and working through nervousness,” but his positive outlook shines through.
Looking to the Future: Joe’s Dreams and Goals
While Joe still has a few years before graduation, his dreams are big. He’s passionate about animals—especially foxes—and envisions working with wildlife one day. Another dream includes restoring a ’67 Mustang, and adding a V8 engine for “more power.” Joe also hopes to travel across the U.S. on a zigzagging road trip in a camper, soaking in the country’s beauty.
Joe’s Advice to Fellow Students
Joe wants other students to know that online learning is more than just convenient—it’s empowering. “It’s easier for my learning style and health,” he explains. The connections he’s built through Destinations Career Academy of Colorado, whether at the back-to-school events or during outdoor adventures, prove that virtual education fosters meaningful relationships.
