Colorado’s Mimi Moll Reinvents Special Education with Steady Support and Innovation
For more than 24 years, Mimi Moll has dedicated her career to students who need more than a standard approach to learning. Ms. Moll is now in her fourth year of teaching in an online setting at Destination Career Academy of Colorado, where she continues to do what she has always done best: meet students where they are and help them move forward with confidence.
Ms. Moll did not enter special education by chance. Early in her teaching career, she began noticing that not every child comes to school with the same support systems, stability, or resources. Some students were navigating social and emotional challenges that traditional classrooms were not designed to address. She realized that without thoughtful intervention, traditional instructional models could sometimes do more harm than good. That realization shaped her career.
Supporting the Whole Child
After earning her master’s degree and refining her credentials, Ms. Moll focused her work on supporting the whole child. She believes academic success cannot happen without emotional safety and strong relationships. Whether teaching in a brick-and-mortar classroom or online, she says the core principle remains the same: students need connection, consistency, and someone who believes in them.
In the online environment, Ms. Moll has found new ways to expand her impact. Many of her students chose online learning after experiencing bullying or teasing in traditional schools. Removing those barriers has allowed them to focus more fully on academic and personal growth, but Ms. Moll knows that access alone is not enough. Engagement is key. When students show up, participate, and feel supported, she consistently sees their grades improve.
Relationships First
Relationships are at the center of her work. One ninth-grade student was deeply worried that Ms. Moll would not continue as her teacher from one year to the next. Being able to maintain that connection meant everything. For Ms. Moll, that moment affirmed how much stability and trust matter for special education students.
Personalized Academic Support
Academically, she goes above and beyond to ensure every student can access grade-level content. If a student reads below grade level, she joins their reading class and adapts instruction so they can fully understand and comprehend the material. For science and history, she creates simplified, structured notes because traditional notetaking does not work for every learner. She thoughtfully implements IEPs and accommodations, often reviewing assignments herself to determine how best to adjust them.
Her background as a former science teacher gives her added depth in content areas. She reads textbook chapters, writes her own notes, and then refines them into accessible formats for her students. She also incorporates responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as Magic School AI and ChatGPT, to level-adjust passages, create customized study guides, and produce clear summaries tailored to student needs. Students receive both adapted materials and original texts, ensuring rigor remains intact while comprehension improves.
Ms. Moll is quick to emphasize that technology does not replace strong teaching. Instead, it enhances her ability to individualize instruction and protect student confidence. The goal is always independence and understanding, not shortcuts.
Collaboration and Commitment
Collaboration is another hallmark of her work. She partners closely with general education teachers who are committed to supporting all students. Together, they ensure accommodations are meaningful and proactive.
Through decades of experience and a willingness to evolve, Ms. Moll has built a classroom environment defined by empathy, innovation, and high expectations. Her impact is measured not only in improved grades, but in restored confidence, strengthened relationships, and students who believe they can succeed.
